The easiest weekend away is a city you can walk across. No daily tickets to decode, no hour lost to a change of hotel neighbourhood. You arrive, you walk, you sleep, you walk a different way.
Stay in the middle of the walk
Book the room inside the area you will actually wander, not the cheaper one two bus rides out. The saving disappears the first evening you are tired. A smaller room in the right streets beats a larger room you resent leaving. Check that you can walk to dinner. That single fact makes the weekend.
Two loops, not a list
Give Saturday a loop to the thing you came for, and Sunday a loop with no goal except a long way round to coffee. If it rains, the Saturday loop should have an indoor middle: a market hall, a museum, a gallery you can leave after forty minutes without guilt. Sunday can be shorter. You are not trying to finish the city.
Going home
Leave after lunch on Sunday if the train is kinder then. A weekend you can cross on foot should end with you still liking your feet. One good meal, one thing you did not expect, and a station you can reach without thinking. That is enough city for two nights.
